The Speakeasy: Romany Music Film Night

20:00 24th July on the The Speakeasy

8.00pm - Reading
Garth Cartwright

London-based Kiwi author Garth reads passages from his book Princes Amongst Mer, for which he spent months travelling through the Balkans, soaking up the real-life drama of Roma musicians and communities. The book is tragic, funny, enthralling and unstintingly honest.

8.30pm - Film
Latcho Drom

(1993, 103 mins. Dir: Tony Gatlif).
Neither fiction nor pure documentary, Latcho Drom follows the 'good journey' travelled by Roma music from its origins in north-western India to the shores of France and Spain. Wonderfully rich and poetically evocative.

10.10-11.00pm - Panel Discussion
Dr Will Guy, Garth Cartwright and Sentimento Gipsy Paganini

.
Members of Sentimento Gipsy Paganini are joined by Bristol-based Roma researcher, Will and author, Garth to discuss the source and evolution of the Roma musical genius.
