Always loved that Oppenheimer quote

Quote from the Womad New Zealand website . . .
'Womad really is clean, green and safe' . . . so it looks like Womad didn't just portray that image . . . they said it out loud n proud.
SBS where did you read/hear that Shell are definitely sponsoring 2013?? I couldn't find that on the website? x

It's on the womad.org page, follow the link on the right, then the one to the official womad nz site and you end up here...

They listened but didn't hear. At best they're being ignorant by failing to offer an explanation.

Actually I'm probably talking a load of rubbish there. If they took the views expressed in this forum to be indicative of those of their customers they'd surmise that the majority of their customers either don't care about the Shell connection or are in favour of it.
After all, most people driving to Womad will have Shell fuel in their vehicles. They may only be the UKs third biggest supplier of fuel but Womaders go out of their way to buy it..., allegedly.

It's all well & good boycotting Shell petrol & diesel, but that only makes up a fraction of the crude oil extracted by them and how do we know whether the petrol purchased from elsewhere, say from Tescos or Sainsburys, does not have its origins in Shell crude or from crude refined by them? Then there's the roads we drive & cycle on. What percentage of the asphalt used in their construction has a Shell connection and that can also be asked of all the modern appliances we use on a daily basis? The list of things in our lives today that have their origins in oil is endless and can be quite surprising. We can't escape the buggers

No one said that though did they? I think you're being a little harsh on people. They are entitled to express their opinion just as you are without being sarcastically criticized for it.
And of course Womad know people have a problem with it, why else would they issue a statement of response to concerns? There is not just this forum there is also the facebook page and twitter and people were ALL over that with complaints about the Shell issue.
It was only 2 months ago that the Shell issue surfaced wasn't it? If so then surely they need more time to be able to replace the money that Shell give them in order to hold the festival if they were considering getting rid of Shell as a sponsor? Perhaps that is not something that is do-able for 2013, doesn't mean they are not considering it in the long term?
At the time that the issue came to light I was following the Womad NZ page and there was a lot of concern on their from the local people of the Taranaki that without the sponsorship of Shell the festival would not take place and would mean a loss of hundreds of local jobs as well as the economic disadvantage to an area that is already struggling.
Don't get me wrong . . . I'm not saying I agree with Shell sponsorship . . . but perhaps things are not as black and white as one might think. x

Well said Scrummy. Can I add - This is a forum to share a love for Womad not a hate for Shell or anything else. You are preaching to the converted...if you want to fight shell, then fight them on their own turf. They wouldn't give two hoots if Womad refused the sponsorship as that is not how they make money.
If its is true that any publicity is good publicity, some of the people here must be up for Shell employees of the month!
