Was I the only one who found that the Big Red Tent was unnecessarily loud and often was seriously detrimental to other events as far away as the open arena? There seemed to be an obsession with bass that penetrated what could have been intimate and revealing sessions in the World Rhythms tend and the Radio 3 tent - I could see that some of the artists were occasionally distracted too, not to mention the stallholders. What's the point in making it so loud?

you are not alone. I was put off going to some events there because of the over loud bass and I know of several others who also did not attend -some musicians!. A better balance and lower sound level menas more of the music is heard..so please Womad loud and bass is not always best! but a wonderful womad anyway -thanks.

No I did too.
Not much point getting the genius that is Boubacar Traore to do a workshop in the World Rhythms tent only for him to be drowned out by bass.
Poor!

I agree - I left after a few minutes and loads of people I spoke to were complaining. But seem to recall that this has been raised before. Last year the bass was just too much and I am sure there were comments on Forum about it. I guess no one at WOMAD ever bothers to read the Forum? I found the best place was directly behind the sound deck - it was bearable there.

I don't spend much time in the Big Red Tent, just saw Linton Kwesi which was OK and tried to listen to Portico Quartet sat outside but the bass was so loud and unpleasant it felt like my insides were vibrating so we left after 10 mins. It really doesn't need to be that loud, does it?

Completely agree, Damien Dempsey was distorted out of all recognition. And there were CHILDREN in there WITHOUT ear defenders. Is that why gigs have to be so loud -so that the people that went to gigs without ear defenders when they were little can hear something because they are all now DEAF??

bass OWWWW!
I'm all for suiting al musical genres but not one to the detriment of all others

I loved the sound in the Big Red. I thought Damo Dempsey sounded great. The bass was fine, really good for my highlight the DJ Yoda set. If it did intrude onto other stages though then yes I see your point.

what about postitioning it facing the Carters! that might help a little,
when at Reading this had to be indoors!

I quite like to be able to feel the bass, but the Siam was a little too loud. In comparison, Molly's Bar and San Fran Disco were very, very quiet. As for Biscuit Head and the boring Badgers, FFS what are they all about? 1 - 2am is the wrong slot for that sort of thing IMO - more an afternoon tea with twinset and pearls. Not for me
