WOMAD Summer School 2009

offers you a chance to deepen your musical experience and develop your skills.
Come and be part of this incredible opportunity to learn first hand from some of the world's most vibrant and accomplished performing artists - from drum legend Billy Cobham to classic UK songwriter Andy White, West African kora maestro N'Faly Kouyaté and acclaimed guitarist Justin Adams.
A chance to be immersed in an exhilarating, creative atmosphere with the broad swathe of cultural flavours you'd expect from a WOMAD festival - a week of workshops, collaborations and discussions offers endless possibilities for cross-pollination and jamming, carrying the spirit of the week through to a wonderful showcase on the final night.
Situated in the idyllic grounds of Bath Spa University, these residential courses will include plenty of opportunities to get to know musicians with amazing stories to tell and an enormous breadth of experience.
Drum Academy
Bill Cobham, one of the world's greatest drummers and a legend in his own lifetime, demonstrates his polyrhythmic wizardry and rock solid rhythm. Bill is a generous and enthusiastic tutor, making this week an unforgettable experience for any drummer.

Guitar Connections
Justin Adams has been making cross-cultural music since the early 90s, with Jah Wobble, Tinariwen and Robert Plant to name a few. Guest artists will be Guinean griot N'faly Kouyate and Justin's current musical collaborator, Gambian 'riti' player, Juldeh Camara. They will explore the cross currents between the Blues, African and Arab music, from a guitarist's point of view. A week of intensive playing, plus time for anecdotes and reflections on Justin's wide musical travels.

Singer Songwriters
Andy White is a gifted singer songwriter who has collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Sinéad O'Connor, Tim Finn and Liam O'Maonlai (Hothouse Flowers). Andy creates a relaxed yet focused working environment and his inspiring and encouraging approach enables students to achieve an artistic freedom, which continues to benefit them long after the week is over.

Children's Art Camp (5-12years)
Children will be making, playing, dancing and creating some fabulous artworks throughout the week. Artists TBC
