It's entirely appropriate that Zoo For You are opening this weekend's proceedings on the newly renamed Charlie Gillett Stage, the lasting memorial to the late, great DJ. It was Charlie himself who personally recommended this Canterbury-based bunch to us, believing that the mighty racket they made to be "exceptional among UK bands, being both rhythmically original and lyrically distinctive". As ever, Charlie was right on the money. This super-cool eight-piece brilliantly stitch together fabrics of many colours - Afrobeat, ska, jazz, dub, funk - but cling on to their own strong identity and clear way of doing things. Everything bears their signature. Round here, we're reminded of the splendid - and equally horn-heavy - Pigbag, another outfit that swallowed a bagful of planet-wide sounds but emerged with something both original and resolutely English. In fact, isn't that a description of Charlie's modus operandi, too?
