Biography by Andy Morgan, July 2003:It was Russ Lawrence who mutated his blues covers band Dead Man’s Handle into the tight soulful dance combo from Bristol who now call themselves The Suspects. Featuring the classic soul train line up of Russ on vocals, Johnny Ley on guitar, Paul King on bass, John Richards on keyboards, Tim Price on drums, Gary Aylesbrook on trumpet, Keith Morgan on Sax and Roger Samson on Trombone, the Suspects understand a thing or two about audience psychology and how to make those tired old feet shuffle, whatever baggage life has lumbered you with. The band’s regular haunt is the Fleece and Firkin in downtown Bristol but they often pile into that ol’ tour van to bring their unstoppable Stax flavoured groove to clubs, weddings, holiday camps and all manner of sweaty beat boxes up and down the country. No usual Suspects to be sure!
