Haunting electronica with dubstep echoes
The world is often a confusing place where seemingly opposing forces can co-exist together. And so it is with the music of Submotion Orchestra, songs where contradiction lies waiting around every bend. ¬Their feather-light sound is counterweighted by its heavy impact; similarly, Ruby Wood's sweet vocals come loaded with the kind of understated menace that made Portishead's records so unnerving. Record stores would probably rack their records under dance music, yet these songs barely make you move a muscle. But no matter. What's important is how wonderful this shimmering, twinkling electronica - filtered through a jazz sensibility - sounds. When arch taste-maker Gilles Peterson located this Leeds seven-piece as occupying the space "somewhere between Cinematic Orchestra and dubstep", he was right on the money. With everything being unhurried and much of it freeform, there'll be much noisier performers playing this weekend, but very few who can equal Submotion Orchestra's cerebral, subliminal impact.
