Musical ambassador for a brighter future
Burundi has had its unfair share of hardship. The crucible of one of the most brutal civil wars in recent times, HIV has ripped through the country while 80% of its population struggle to survive below the poverty line. And yet, and yet… On the face of it, the music of Steven Sogo, one of the keenest talents of Burundian music's new wave, shouldn't sound a fraction as hopeful as it does. But this is a young troubadour clutching a bagful of songs that look forward to new horizons rather than over their shoulder at past misery and injustice. His songs cut to the chase on the matters of the day, all delivered in a soulful, plaintive voice and often endowed with a gentle central African swing. That his tasteful little band answer to the name of Hope Street speaks volumes. Better must come.
