Geologist Stephen Pekar investigates historical climate and oceanographic changes, from when CO2 was at the high levels predicted for this century.

To investigate the past, he looks at sediments, microfossil and geochemical data obtained from cores drilled in near-shore to deep-sea locations, from the tropics to Antarctica. He has traveled to 40 countries, working in six - from archeology in France, grape picking in Germany, movie extra in China, to house pianist in a restaurant in Israel - but has most importantly been with expeditions collecting multi-channel seismic data to record sediments preserved below the sea floor. His goal is to locate the optimal site to drill sediments deposited more than 35 million years ago, when the Earth was much warmer than today and Antarctica was mainly ice-free.
