The 18-legged Bristolian groove machine

There are certain bands we'd have all liked to have been a member of. Geno-era Dexys, perhaps, or maybe The Specials before it all got a bit nasty. You suspect that playing as one-ninth of West Country funk force Smerin's Anti-Social Club has its pleasures too. Exuberant and indivisibly unified, their platter of funk, ska and dub (with a little side order of 1920s-style swing) places them in the same ballpark as The Skatalites and fellow Bristolians from a previous generation, Pigbag. SASC have been demolishing every audience that greets them, slaying all-comers with fantastic ensemble playing and an overwhelming sense of fraternity. Collective tongues are firmly in collective cheeks throughout - see here their takes on the Doctor Who theme tune and on pip-squeaking Aled Jones' Walking In The Air. If the idea of the latter disturbs you somewhat, worry ye not - it's got plenty of skank in its tank.
