Jamaica meets Cuba in a ska stylee
It's a scientifically proven fact that everybody likes ska. Everybody. In fact, all a political party needed to do to sidestep this coalition nonsense would have been to adopt The Skatalites' Guns Of Navarone as their campaign anthem and watch the votes flood in. So fully expect a landslide victory for Ska Cubano this weekend, for they've gone one better. Not only do they have plenty of skank in their tank, as their name suggests they musically flit between Jamaica and Cuba. As such, the band give a strong whiff of the sounds filling the air in pre-revolution Havana and Santiago, a time when Cuba was much more welcoming of the music of its neighbours, whether rhythm & blues from New Orleans or calypso from Trinidad. But if a Ska Cubano show reaches back in time for its inspiration, it's a hurricane-force performance delivered very much in the here and now.
