Keepers of the son flame.
It's an impatient world that's constantly looking for new angles and fresh innovation. This is especially true with music. Pleasingly, though, there are plenty of people who turn their back on such a state of flux, preferring to keep their world constant and comparatively unchanging. Sierra Maestra belong here. Not for them a rapper's guest cameo or a bass-heavy grime remix. Instead - and since the mid-70s - these Cuban old boys have been flying the flag for son, the generations-old style played on tres, trumpet, bass and percussion. Not that they're simply revivalists offering facsimiles of what's gone before; for instance, when the spirit takes them, they'll happily slip a little Latin jazz into proceedings. But Sierra Maestra remain the real deal and, as the Buena Vista alumni slip off to that social club in the sky, take on the role of Cuba's musical ambassadors with dedication and pride.
