Musicians beware. Scooping a prestigious prize is no guarantee of ongoing, future success. Take the most prestigious prize of all in the UK music industry - the Mercury. Plenty of previous winners (Gomez, Talvin Singh, Klaxons…) have rather underwhelmed us with their subsequent releases that haven't fulfilled the promise of their victories. There's no such worry with Rua McMillan. With several notable gongs in the cabinet (including the BBC Radio Scotland Young Musician Of The Year for 2009), Rua's work always bears the mark of unimpeachable quality. A fiddler from Nairn in the Scottish Highlands, this is a young man who matches his technical excellence with a fine ear for interpretation and a neat line in his own goose-bumping compositions. With sympathetic accompaniment from bodhran and guitar, Rua's vivid playing lifts us on feather-light wings of song and deposits us in a more mountainous landscape several hundred miles north of here.
