Planet-shrinking all-woman acoustic trio
It's a long way between Scotland and the farther reaches of the Pacific Rim - half a world away, to be precise. Yet the musical elements that combine to create the Pacific Curls sound might suggest that the group's three members grew up next door to each other, rather than on opposing sides of the globe. They just sound so natural together, this blurring of styles and sounds - Scottish folk fiddle, ukelele, Maori and English vocals, percussion, traditional Pacific Island instruments, even a little jazz swing. And what might have been an ill-conceived mish-mash is actually the opposite - a delicate balance of shade, of weight, of propulsion and of introspection, one best summed up by the title of their 2008 record, Pacifi Celta. It's a label that not only shrinks the world and shortens connections, it also hints at the generations-old traditions underpinning the Pacific Curls sound.
