The ultimate goodtime DJ – by royal appointment
At what point, over the last 30 years or so, has Norman Jay sat down with a cup of tea, ripped open a packet of digestives and just put his feet up? Never. It’s simply not in the genetic make-up of this tireless chap, the godfather of UK dance DJs. Having first taken to the decks at the ridiculously tender age of eight, by the time the 1980s dawned he was already on a two-man mission –with brother Joey to spread a particular musical message under the Good Times Sound System banner. Norman’s love of all black music (but particularly that of a funky or soulful disposition) is what has dictated everything he’s done since, whether it’s setting up the pioneering pirate radio station Kiss, introducing the UK to house music or helming with Gilles Peterson – the hugely significant Talkin’ Loud record label. And we haven'’t even mentioned his MBE, DJing at Thierry Henry’s wedding, being the subject of a full-length documentary film or that surprising appearance on Question Time. The man’s impeccable selections never fail to ensure the good times just be prepared to simultaneously shake your ass and smile your face off.
