Joyful pop-soul from the townships
"I had a dream of being a performer." When you've been dealt the hand that Nomfusi Gotyana has, dreams are the only thing to offer an escape, a chink of light in the darkness. Her father was imprisoned when she was three and her mother died of AIDS before Nomfusi reached her teenage years. She was then cared for by her aunt who died of the same disease just three years later. But Nomfusi's spirit couldn't be extinguished and she launched - via accountancy study and a job as a singing waitress - a fast-climbing music career. After all the harsh life lessons dumped on her young life, it's quite extraordinary that her music should be so full of joy. Blessed with an effortlessly captivating voice (think a more explosive Miriam Makeba), her pop-soul stylings come with added gospel and township jive flavours courtesy of her nifty band the Lucky Charms.
