It’s impossible not to like – nay, love – Mr Scruff. Operating in a world where ego is king and bullshit is the lingo, the man known to his mum as Andy Carthy is as down to earth as you could possibly imagine. Most big-time DJs turn up, play, count the money and run. Not Scruff. His marathon gigs are the stuff of legend – “from when doors open until it’s time to go home!” – and we’re delighted to be welcoming him back for another wonderfully lengthy trawl through his ever-expanding record boxes. And those record boxes hide treasures from all over the shop. Reggae, hip-hop, funk, electro, soul, African, jazz, deep house, Latin… And while your ears and feet are treated to the best party selection you ever heard, your eyes don’t wanting either, thanks to Scruff’s brilliant self-designed visuals. And your tastebuds get a work-out too, thanks to the chap’s own charity tea-and-cake stall. Yup, a Mr Scruff gig is a sensory overload.
