2001 Biography:If it is the future of South African Jazz you are talking about, then Moses Khumalo is a name that is bound to come up.Talented saxophonist Moses Khumalo was born in Meadowlands, Soweto in 1979. After matriculating from Pace Community College in 1993 Khumalo went on to study music at Manu Technical College from 1994 to 1998.During his first year at Manu, Khumalo studied the piano and it was only in February 1995 that this young saxophonist actually started playing the saxophone. While still at Manu, Khumalo performed his first gig at the Grahmastown Festival in 1995 with the Soweto Youth Jazz Band under the auspices of Mokale Koapeng. The orchestra went on to perform in places like London and various West African countries for the next three years.Khumalo’s fresh talent and remarkable ability led to great demand for the young saxophonist, who has performed with the likes of Hugh Masekele, Sibongile Khumalo, Themba Mkhize and Paul Hanmer. Khumalo has been part of various bands that have included renowned musicians such as Khaya Mahlangu, Fana Zulu, Vusi Khumalo and Prince Lengoasa.Khumalo is currently performing as Moses Khumalo and friends, a respected band of talented musicians. He composes his own music and will soon be going into the studio to record his debut album, to be released through Sheer Sounds.
