2001:Mondetta is the collaborative effort of South Africa’s brightest musical stars.The band emerged as the result of a one-off gig at the Bassline. The band features Steve Newman and Gito Baloi of Tananas and Wendy Oldfield.Womad 2001 will mark the anniversary of violinist Julia K’s involvement with the band. At the event last year she arrived with a violin in hand and asked Steve if she could join his workshop. Never having met her he welcomed the jam and she became a permanent fixture.Percussionist Elad has been coming in and out of South Africa for the last couple of years. Based in Israel he travels the world pursuing his music. Together, this five piece line up produces ambient, world music, incorporating a variety of styles with no geographical boundaries.Mondetta are set to record an album in August, which will be released in September.
