Time-travelling retro soul
Along with the oft-cited 'musical differences', one of the music industry's most timeworn clichés is that a band underappreciated in its homeland is 'big in Japan'. But that's the tale of retro soulsters Mama's Gun who know full well what the view is like from atop the Japanese charts. The chaps are named after Erykah Badu's best-received album and it's an appropriate inspiration - it was the record on which Ms Badu gave the biggest nod to her '70s soul forebears. That's the era that clearly floats Mama's Gun's boat too as they smoothly slide through the decade's stylings, from echoes of early Hall & Oates one minute to the tightest of Meters-style funk jams the next. And it's not only the record-buying public of Japan who've been impressed. Uncut magazine described last year's debut album, Routes To Riches, as "a masterclass in blue-eyed bubblegum soul, as heart-warmingly catchy as anything from Stevie Wonder's '70s purple patch". Praise indeed.
