Biography by Mary Genis, July 2003:Makutu (Spiritual Drummers) are an eclectic group of percussionists from Zambia, Ghana, South Africa and the UK who fuse the modern and the traditional to create beats with no boundaries. Led by Ghanaian Kristian Bediiako the group includes South African djembe player Brent Stander and ‘Jesus’ one of the finest djembe & conga players from the Gambia. Accompanied by UK percussionists Bob Peg and Ed Shearer who studied Cuban percussion on congas Makutu aim to unite the world through the universal language of music.
