This very special collaboration was inspired when Patrick Duff first saw extraordinary South African octogenarian singer Madosini perform at the 2002 WOMAD Rivermead Festival. Her soulful singing made such an emotional impact on Patrick that he was moved to write, “…(Madosini has a true unadulterated expression of the creative spirit. The music seemed to flow from a dark river that was thousands of years old and that flowed from deep inside the earth from a forgotten place A forgotten place in my heart that was given expression in this music. A performance that has stayed in my heart’s memory”).” Madosini, ‘The Veteran’, is the Queen and muse of Mpondoland. Her time-enriched skills as a composer, musician, storyteller and dancer have made her an icon among the Bundu people of the eastern Cape. Madosini plays songs of ancient village life on the umrhubhe (mouthbow), uhadi (mouth harp) and isitolotolo (Jew’s harp). Patrick and Madosini are joined in this special performance by Capetown musician and dancer Vuyo on marimba an talking drums. A member of veteran South African group Amampondo, Vuyo is a charismatic and engaging performer who will add yet another magical dimension to this collaboration.
