Your next favourite singer-songwriter
The field of twentysomething women strumming acoustic guitars is an extraordinarily crowded one. To stand even a few inches above the herd of Joni Mitchell-a-likes, you've got to be saying something new in a somehow new way. Lail Arad's got it dead right. We're not getting the usual over-wrought existential angst from this adopted Londoner; instead we're being served fresh, candid commentary on our times, often with tongue firmly in cheek (after all, rarely does a singer-songwriter include references to such everyday tasks as exfoliating your legs and wearing padded bras). For those who need a point of comparison, Lail could be regarded as a more humorous Martha Wainwright, albeit one who likes to pep up proceedings with a little Parisian-sounding shuffle. Confident, wise and a little sassy, we think this young woman's going to be something of a star. You're advised to jump aboard the bandwagon before there's standing room only.
