Soulful folk or folky soul?
From Kansas City via Paris comes Krystle Warren, a woman who is destined - surely - to have her name and music known by millions. Many artists claim to cut across the rigid lines of music genres. No-one does it as unselfconsciously as Krystle. Moving so smoothly between soul, folk, jazz and (a little bit of) country that it seems ludicrous that they were even separate entities in the first place, this is a woman whose record collection clearly finds Willie Nelson next to Erykah Badu, Leonard Cohen tight with Marvin Gaye. While an engaging and witty performer, Krystle sings with deep conviction about matters of both heart and state, her deliciously androgynous voice never less than compelling. It's an instrument in itself, one that The Guardian so neatly described as "vividly recalling Nina Simone in its depth and smokiness, as well as John Martyn and Jeff Buckley in terms of virtuosic variety". That'll do nicely. Very nicely, in fact.
