“The best pure party shizzle mash-up DJ bar none.” That’s the label worn by JSTAR, the man whose splicing together of reggae instrumentals and hip hop MCing have earned himself a formidable and ever-widening reputation. Released in limited numbers on good old-fashioned seven-inch vinyl, these soundclashes have won this fast-rising man of mystery plenty of admirers. Before his untimely death, John Peel was a big fan of these creations, an approval seconded by other turntable titans like Grandmaster Flash, Francois K and another of this year’s Rivermead guests, Norman Jay. Then there’s the lengthy list of folk who’ve commissioned JSTAR to remix their tracks, among them Scissor Sisters, Ms Dynamite and DJ Vadim. For tonight’s show, he’s joined by regular conspirator MC Honey Brown, a renegade from the London hip-hop scene back in the day who comes ready to electrify the crowd with some truly dynamite freestyling.
