From Australia
Aboriginal singer-songwriter and the unlikeliest overnight sensation
Not too many of this weekend's performers can claim to have had their music used on Skins. Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu can. Normally the forum for the work of skinny-jeaned popsters, it was highly improbable that the show's producers would use a searingly personal song from a blind Aboriginal musician to soundtrack the look-at-me woes of a bunch of work-shy fictional teenagers. That they did is indicative of the sudden impact of this shy singer-songwriter from a remote island off the Northern Territories coast. Two years ago, Geoffrey was scarcely known among Australia's music cognoscenti. Now, after the phenomenal success of his debut record Gurrumul, Bjork, Elton John and Sting are lining up to praise and worship. Indeed, Geoffrey's delicate, humane songs - often concerned with the plight of Australia's indigenous population - prompted The Guardian to suggest he was "an Aboriginal answer to Nick Drake". Come join the queue of admirers.
