Vintage sounds from the veteran selector
Gaz Mayall has always been surrounded - nay, consumed - by music. Son of British blues godfather John Mayall, his childhood memories include Paul McCartney playing at the family piano and meeting John Lennon dressed up as Santa. Gaz's first words were apparently 'boogie woogie'. So it was odds-on that his adult life would be devoted to music - not only through fronting the ska band The Trojans, but principally as the go-to DJ for vintage R&B and Jamaican sounds. Although he scarcely looks old enough, for the last 30 years Gaz has overseen the legendary Gaz's Rockin' Blues club night in London where, on more than 1500 weekday nights, he's spun his vast collection of vinyl for the delectation of the capital's more discerning dancers. Now it's WOMAD's turn ¬¬- but not before he steps into the confessional. "My name is Gaz Mayall and I am a musicaholic," he sheepishly admits. That's no sin at all.
