It's one of the key commandments of popular music: don't embark on a cover version unless the makeover is radical and not a mere carbon copy of the original. New York's Easy Star All-Stars upheld this doctrine many times over. They made their name with heavy-duty re-rubs of classic albums, dipping cherished long-players like The Dark Side Of The Moon, OK Computer (brilliantly rebadged as Radiodread) and Sgt Pepper into their bubbling vat of reggae, dub and ska. The results were always imaginative and gripping. Although most recently they've been writing and recording original material, their reputation as an unstoppable rhythm force remains undented, feeding off the universal appeal of the music of one particular island in the sun.
