Genre-exploding "renegade futuristic skank"
For the last decade and a half, the Dub Pistols have been rocking joints right across this fast-spinning planet of ours, proving to any doubters within earshot just how potent a mash-up of dub, ska, hip-hop, big beat, techno and punk can be. Or, as they so economically - and poetically - call it, "renegade futuristic skank". This exercise in genre-smashing is highly commendable on its own merits; when it's accomplished with help from some notable heavyweight personages, it really shouldn't be ignored. It appears that chief Pistol - the DJ/producer Barry Ashworth - is in possession of a bulging contacts book with the great and the good just a call away. Not only have the Pistols delivered remixes for the likes of Moby, Ian Brown and Limp Bizkit, they've also called up the vocal talents of rappers Blade and Rodney P, as well as The Specials' king of deadpan Terry Hall. The essential sound of the city.
