From Ethiopia, United Kingdom
Ethiopia goes dub-wise. Brilliantly…
After the astonishing success of the Ethiopiques series of vintage reissues, it was only right and proper that someone went to the source and made something new. That someone was Nick Page (aka Count Dubulah), formerly a lynchpin of WOMAD faves Transglobal Underground and Temple Of Sound. Having unearthed Ethiopian singers and musicians of astonishing quality, his Dub Colossus project was made flesh in the form of the excellent In A Town Called Addis long-player. It's a deeply evocative record that's packed with mystery ¬- imagine Augustus Pablo taking a working holiday in East Africa. Page's intervention proved timely. "Our musical culture is under attack from inside and out," explains one of the main players, the young pianist Samuel Yerga. "It's all rock bands, hip-hop groups and pop singers. But this album gave us something new and Ethiopian to work towards."
