DJ LUBI (LUBI JOVANOVIC) (SALSOUL/CASA LATINA/STRAIGHT NO CHASER MAGAZINE) With over 20 years DJ experience, Lubi Jovanovic is one of the original UK latin "Dons" from back in the day! Started spinning heavy mambo and latin jazz for jazzdancers in the early 80's, progressed to salsa in the late 80's/early 90's, and now in 2002, is the LATIN FREESTYLE SPECIALIST. Resident DJ for 7 years at the defunkt but legendary CASA LATINA (Leeds), his current club is SALSOUL!, both in Leeds and Manchester, where funky salsa collides head-on with latin hiphop, salsa/soul and latin ragga! He is also chief latin music writer for highly respected global magazine STRAIGHT NO CHASER. Can be heard playing straight ahead salsa at venues like Scala and Bar Rumba in London, Pontins Salsa Weekenders, Birmingham's Latin Motion, Bath's Latin Massive. But just as likely to hear him spinning latin hiphop/nu-beats at his Salsoul night, or opening shows for the likes of Ozomatli or Sidestepper. Maybe you've caught him at the Bacardi B-Bars at the big festivals dropping heavy latin house and latin funk? Whatever latin style it is, it's deep and always rocks the floor! On another tip, Lubi has been spinning old school funk, jazz, soul, brasilian beats, hiphop and r&b for years as part of the DIG! Family crew, guesting in London on numerous occasions at venues like Jazz Cafe and Point 101, and taking his music to gigs further away (Dublin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Barcelona to name a few). As an original salsa/mambo/latin jazz pioneer, he's now firmly dedicated to spreading the nu-latin beats gospel and taking the music to a younger, wider audience that finds straight salsa "old hat" and "cheesy"! DJ CARLITO aka CARLOS SILVA (LA TASCA, MANCHESTER/SALSOUL/LOS DEL CALLE DANCERS) Mozambique born Portuguese DJ of only 26 years of age, his musical loves are hiphop/r&b and salsa. Has been fusing the two for the last 8 years in Manchester, first at Copacobana, now at La Tasca. Massively skilled beat mixing dj - all on cd!!! - and does his own re-edits and mixes of big tunes. Very talented dancer who runs his own "street salsa" dance group Los Del Calle (From The Streets), who fuse salsa with hiphop popping and locking, and sometimes breaking! Now fully fledged member of the SALSOUL! crew, co-promoting the monthly Manchester SALSOUL with Lubi Jovanovic. SALSOUL CREW: full line-up Alongside Lubi and Carlos, there is DJ Fabio Bahia, leading Brasilian DJ outside London who specialises in samba reggae and hard kicking salsa. There are also The Boricua Boys - Jose "El Bash" and Joel, two young Puerto Rican DJs who came to the UK with the US forces and decide to stay (both still only in their mid 20's!). Jose is the hiphop/r&b/house specialist supreme (again monster mixer all on cd only!), and Joel is the San Juan salsa demon. Already mentioned are the dance group Los Del Calle, which number from 3 to 10 dancers, and are like nothing else in the UK. A second dance group affiliated to the SALSOUL crew are Las Chicas Malas - four 21 year old girls who switch from samba reggae to r&b latino without a hitch! Two Brasilians, and Italian and Spanish girl, they definately do as Mystikal says - "shake that ass, watch yourself!". THE SALSOUL! FLAVA - moving the UK latin scene in the right direction - INTO THE 21ST CENTURY!
