Fado-inspired quartet - with added smiles

You could be forgiven for assuming that, seeing that Deolinda hail from Portugal, this four-piece are just another straight fado outfit. Not so. Not for Deolinda the (admittedly attractive) sense of doom and fatality that dominates - nay, defines - fado. Sure, the Deolinda sound is, like that of all fado groups, delicate, measured and acoustic, but the quartet otherwise break with the style's comparatively strict 'rules'. Not only do they refuse to wear black when they perform, they also let a little Lisbon sunshine in on their songs, even - shock! horror! - adding a smidgeon of humour to their performances. The mournful, funereal pace is also often dispensed with as the musicians work themselves up into occasional flurries of excitement. It all makes for a highly attractive proposition - all of the beauty with little of the misery. Who can blame them? There's enough austerity around in the world right now, after all.
