Dennis Rollins’ Badbone & CoMargaret Thatcher famously needed to sleep for just four hours in every 24. Dennis Rollins clearly needs even less. Such is his ridiculously over-packed schedule, it’s perfectly reasonable to assume that the UK’s premier trombonist only finds time for 20 minutes’ shut-eye each night. Busy isn’t the word. An alumni of the Courtney Pine/Jazz Warriors axis of excellence, he finds his diary full with limitless educational work, solo projects (like his back-to-Africa Griots T’Garage show) or lending his mighty blowing to the records of Blur, Baaba Maal, Jamiroquai and Los de Abajo. And then there’s the project he’s increasingly most famous for – the jazz-flavoured, full-on groove of Badbone & Co. Always eager to reveal untold history, the band reach deep into the heritage of black British music – jazz, blues, soul, funk, hip-hop and beyond. But this is no po-faced lecture. It’s a relentless wall of groove, one supercharged even further by Badbone & Co’s new-as-the-dew album Big Night Out. For the time being at least, it looks like sleep deprivation remains the order of the day. Someone buy that man a hammock! In a few words… Roof-raising, trombone-led jazzy grooves
