David Lowe's Dreamcatcher: What…is in Between?David Lowe, the man who makes the music of Dreamcatcher, has a gift for tunes and sounds that ‘work well to picture’, as they say in the trade. For twenty five years, David has made a living writing for television, from title themes (notably the theme for BBC TV news) and end credit sequences, to entire scores. Even when he doesn’t consciously try, David still provides a parallel soundtrack to our experiences. ‘Would You…?’ by Touch and Go, his top 3 hit in 1998, refused to retire gracefully when it dropped from the charts, as countless film directors and advertising creatives have continued to use its catchy trumpet melody. When the Dreamcatcher album was first released in 1997, Andy Kershaw and Bob Harris, two of that tiny group of British radio DJs who choose their own music, both regularly played it. In 2001, Thomas Brooman, the creative director of WOMAD, invited Dreamcatcher to provide the musical accompaniment for dance troupes at Reading and the Canary Islands, and followed through with a similar brief for WOMAD Singapore in 2002. In 2004, Thomas invited David Lowe's Dreamcatcher to provide a soundscape for the tropical biodome at The Eden Project, for the event that WOMAD staged there on August Bank Holiday. Thomas' challenge sent David back to the drawing board, or rather, to his recording studio. The huge size of the biodome required an extensive sound system with many speakers, creating an opportunity to arrange the music so that at any given moment, some elements of might be audible in one part of the space but not in another, where something else could be heard. This material has now been reformatted to work in the mighty space of the Siam Tent.David drew material from several sources, including words by the poets Roger McGough ('Five Car Family' and 'Oxygen'), Benjamin Zephaniah and the Cornwall-based writer, Anna Maria Murphy. Japanese keyboard player and singer Mieko Shimizu is featured on several songs, and the presentation also includes one song each from the albums of Dreamcatcher ('Seventh Heaven') and Touch and Go ('So Hot'). What…is in Between? is being prepared for release as a limited edition album on Oval for sale through WOMAD, from early 2006. www.davidlowemusic.com www.ovalmusic.co.uk
