Da Lata

Photo Of Da Lata

From Brazil, United Kingdom

With its sizable ex-pat community, London’s always been a mite keen on Brazilian music. So when the silky smooth, effortlessly lithe sound of Da Lata hit the capital in the mid-90s, it was a marriage made in samba heaven. Fusing a deep appreciation of Brazil’s more African rhythms with a sharp understanding of European dance music, the band instantly received the patronage of DJs from across the globe, whether in Europe (Gilles Peterson, Rainer Truby, Gerry Lyseight), New York (where they hit hard with the legendary Body & Soul club night) or Japan (where their first single was released on UFO’s Brownswood label). With their tune Pro Manha rocking dancefloors fom Torquay to Tokyo, albums for Chris Blackwell’s Palm Pictures label solidified their reputation, as did some truly immaculate live shows. Appealing – in a rather fiendish manner – to both the club crowd and hardcore world music devotees, this will prove to be a sultry late-night feast. In a few words… Braziliance with a London postcode
