The covers band it's ok to love
In the days of yore when punk's young guns stormed the battlements of the music establishment (ask your parents), they did so armed with cheap, often nasty electric guitars. Spool forward a generation and, from where we're stood, it seems just as likely the youngsters will now reach for a good old-fashioned brass instrument. And when it comes to brass bands, Brassroots offer up further proof that New Orleans doesn't have it all its own way. Tracking the footprints of past WOMAD performers Youngblood Brass Band (from Wisconsin) and Chicago's Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, these Londoners make a mighty fine racket too, treating the pop hits of both today and yesteryear to an all-over brass re-rub. They segue from Crazy In Love to Gnarls Barkley's Crazy without missing a beat, before hurtling off in the direction of Dick Dale's Miserlou, Radiohead's Karma Police and, most majestically, Bowie's Let's Dance. A treat.
