Soul music legend in the house
Most musicians would give their hind teeth - and the odd limb - to write one single out-and-out classic tune in their entire lifetime. Best not to mention to them then that Booker T Jones wrote Green Onions, that enduringly irresistible instrumental, when he was still in high school. And it was far from a premature career peak. He went on to form and front Booker T and the MGs, the Stax Records house band who played on the records of Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett et al, as well as scoring hits under their own name, including Soul Limbo, beloved by the nation's cricket followers as the Test Match Special theme tune. Four decades on, he's far from a mere heritage act, most recently recording a record with Drive-By Truckers. And he remains popular music's most famous practitioner of a certain instrument. "I feel like I speak through the organ," he grins.
