"If you grow up in a so-called 'third world' country, everything is political around you. I don't think I ever grew up separating politics from culture or culture from music. All of that is one." From his words to American radio programme Afropop Worldwide, it's clear that Blitz The Ambassador doesn't rap about the size of his car, jewels or glands. A well-timed throwback to rap's more socially conscious heyday (KRS-One and Rakim are clear inspirations), Blitz is someone who upholds the duty to tell it like it is. Although now resident in Brooklyn, it's his Ghanaian upbringing that defines him; his new album Native Sun unravels hip-hop, moving back in time through Caribbean sound system culture before returning to the mother continent. Often backed by a full soul-funk combo, Blitz finds himself where old dissolves into new, where Afrobeat and highlife invisibly become hip-hop and future beats. Looking to the past to move forward.
