English folk's dirty dozen

They might be 12-strong proof that there's more to folk music than sole-trading balladeers, but Bellowhead have nonetheless moved well beyond the novelty 'folkie big band' tag that initially greeted their arrival several summers back. For this is folk music in Technicolor, in High Definition, Wellesian in its ambition, Dickensian in its detail. There's no mystery why they've scooped the Best Live Act prize at the BBC Folk Awards five times over, their massed horns and strings both exuberant and fast-moving, but anchored by the absorbing narration of ringmaster Jon Boden. You early birds are in for a rowdy, riotous experience that will set the bar high for the rest of the weekend. Hold tight.
