From Spain
Far-travelling violin and accordion duo
The intersection of a band's influences is largely where their sound can be located. You get a rough idea of how they sound. Judging by their own declared influences, Barrunto Bellota Band are slightly harder to corral and contain, tipping their hats to everyone from Beethoven and Bach to Part and Piazolla, via Stephane Grappelli, Glenn Gould, 17 Hippies and numerous klezmer bands. And they cover this wide terrain through the medium of just violin and accordion, their classical rigour loosened by a wandering spirit that makes stopovers in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. Enthralling performers at WOMAD's recent bash in the pair's hometown of Caceres, it's entirely apt that they'll be making their UK debut on our Charlie Gillett Stage. Charlie was a tireless Europhile, eager to discover music that - like his own worldview - dispensed with notions of border and segregation. Barrunto Bellota fit that bill perfectly.
