Biography 2001With Danza Libre also appearing this weekend, WOMAD audiences have a great chance to catch up with strong and vibrant tradition of Cuban dance. Cutumba was formed in 1960 and for this tour comprises 10 dancers, five musicians and three singers, many of whom have won prizes in Cuba. This is their first UK visit, although they have toured Europe and Latin America. Their show ‘Raices y Traditiones’ traces the history of Cuban music in an exuberant display of grace, sensuality and athleticism, topped off with thumping percussive rhythms.Biography by Campbell Stevenson, July 2001Established in 1960, Cutumba are one of the best-known Cuban National Dance Companies. The Company appearing at WOMAD 2001 comprise ten dancers, five musicians and three singers. This will be Cutumba's first-ever UK performance and they trace Cuban music and dance from its Afro-Cuban roots to the present day.
